When a money judgment is entered in the Civil or Supreme Court's of New York City, the Plaintiff can obtain the services of a New York City Marshal in order to enforce the judgment. The Marshal is a public official and is empowered to institute a wage garnishment with a judgment debtor's employer and/or contact a judgment debtor's banking institution to levy up to double the amount of the judgment balance.

In 1980, Executive Order #44 established the Mayor's Commission on New York City Marshals. NYC Marshals are appoint my the Mayor to a 5-year term, and earn their income from fees charged for their services rather then from salary.

As of the date of publishing this article, we have identified 39 Marshal's operating across New York City, however, the New York City Civil Court Act provides authorization for up to 83 city marshals. As of the date this article was written, Mayor Bill DeBlasio has not appointed a new City Marshal since he was appointed to office. Although each Marshal may have an office in a particular city or borough, the Marshal's power is not limited to the location of their office. They can operate anywhere within the confines of NYC.
