Background Information on the SLM Private Credit Student Loan Trust
SLM Student Loan Trust is a Delaware trust, associated with
Sallie Mae where multiple
private student loans are pooled together by banking institutions for hedging purposes.
SLM Private Credit Student Loan Trusts include private loans strictly originated by Sallie Mae. If your loan
was originally serviced by
Sallie Mae, it may be pooled in a
SLM Private Credit Student Loan Trust. The securitization of these pools of loans into trusts allows them to
be sold to investors on the financial markets.
As of recently, a company called Navient was spun-off from Sallie Mae Inc.
to handle the servicing of federal student loans, which comprised a substantial
amount of the annual revenues for Sallie Mae. Sallie Mae lent over $160
billon of student loans to nearly 25 million students, making it the biggest
lender of student loans in the United States.
In or around 2010, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau was made in
order to take over certain responsibilities from the Federal Trade Commission
in reference to regulating collection agencies and other consumer based
business. The CFPB had reported receiving over 1,500 complaints regarding
Sallie Mae and it's servicing of private and government student loans.
A group of consumers brought a class action against
Sallie Mae under a federal consumer protection law known as the TCPA - Telephone
Consumer Protection Act. In this consumer lawsuit, the Plaintiffs allege
that Sallie Mae caused possibly unauthorized and repeated robot-calls
to be made the the borrows in conncection with the servicing or collection
of student loan accounts.
